Program Description

Event Details

Adaptations of Regency literature, like Jane Austen's Sanditon, as well as imagined worlds set in the period, like Bridgerton, have made modern readers and viewers more aware of the positionality of people of color during the Regency period in England.  Join us for a lecture and discussion to explore the complex history of literary representations of people of color in Jane Austen's novels and other works of literature during the Regency era, and you’ll find that there's more to the Regency than young white ladies in ball gowns!

The presentation will be approximately 70 minutes followed by Q/As.

Presenter: Mary Helen Truglia, PhD is the Director of Writing Tutorial Services and Affiliate Faculty in English at Indiana University, Bloomington.  She is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) - Indiana Chapter, and of the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women and Gender.
